I for one am delighted that the At Home food offerings haven’t disappeared since hospitality has started to reopen. There is a big difference between at At Home dining experience and a take-away; both have a place and it’s great to have these options still available.

REVIEW OF CHOP HOUSE HOME X STORE BBQ PACKAGE

With the Chop House Home x Store, they’re bringing the very best of the Chop House experience for you to enjoy at home. As well as their meal kits which give you everything you need for cooking up a feast, they also offer a range of individual products including cuts of steak, sides, sauces and cocktails so that you can build your own perfect Chop House package.

I sampled the Porterhouse Home Dining Kit (£65.00) and a few individual products that are ideal for a BBQ or a braai. Many of the items in the Dining Kit can be purchased separately too and cuts of 35 day dry aged steak start at £9.00 for the Rump.

In my box was :

1 x Porterhouse Steak which gives you a sirloin and a fillet steak from either side of the bone (included in the Dining Kit)

The steak is what you buy this home dining kit for and there is nothing that lets this 2 inch thick porterhouse steak down. I don’t remove the unctuous thin layer of fat that runs along the sirloin side of the Porterhouse as this is the flavour vehicle - it provides that grass fed, dry aged subtle earthy taste to the meat once you sear it on the hot grill and render it down.

The bark on this porterhouse is impressive as it takes to the heat of the BBQ as if it was born to do this. Chop House provide the tub of butter and a rosemary brush in which to baste this beast.

Chop House also provide information cards on how to cook the perfect steak - in the oven or on the BBQ as well as a timeline on when to get all the other ingredients in the oven, prepped or dished up. I found this very handy indeed especially for the cooking of the mushrooms and the chips.

Rested and ready, the steak was cut by edging a sharp knife along the bone on either side releasing the sirloin and fillet from the bone. The steaks were perfectly cooked, blushing pink in the middle with a lovely caramelised bark on the outside. The knife slid through it like butter!

The chips were big and fat, but not crispy or crunchy, they were fluffy and warming instead and complimented the steak wonderfully well. They were thick like doorstops which was ideal for scooping up the sauces and building perfect bites of chip, steak, sauce and slaw.

I drowned the mushrooms in garlic sauce when cooking them and they soaked up all that juice and flavour, combine this with the zingy slaw - a dinnertime delight mouthful after mouthful.

The Watermelon Martinis were sensational - the colder the better, so pop them in the fridge at the start of the prep and they’ll be on the right side of ice cold when it’s time to plate up.

Steak is king. This is the meat that all other meats want to be; and steak is always going to be one of my all time favourite go to meals. The Chop House understand meat. It’s what they do best. At £32.50 per head (£65 for the Porterhouse dining kit), this is a good deal. There is ample steak, and with all the added extras, you’ll not go hungry. My only wish for this Dining Kit - a pudding to round it all off!
