Unlimited Steak Frites at Kyloe: A Weekend Ritual for Edinburgh’s Carnivore’s

There are rituals that define a city. In Edinburgh, some are centuries old - ceilidhs, Hogmanay fireworks, the piping in of haggis on Burns Night. Others are newer, cheekier, and just as worthy of celebration. Enter Kyloe’s Unlimited Steak Frites, a Saturday-only indulgence that has quickly become a rite of passage for anyone who loves their beef served with a side of bravado.

From 12pm to 4pm every Saturday, Kyloe invites diners to test their appetite against the grill. For £35 per person, you’re served plate after plate of 120g ribeye steak, golden chips, and a peppercorn sauce so silky it could double as velvet. The rules are simple: finish your plate, order another. No sharing, no wasting, no cheating. Just you, your fork, and the question, how many can you manage?

The Ritual Begins

Like all good rituals, there’s a prelude. At Kyloe, it arrives in the form of a chunk of bread and butter, a modest offering that’s less about filling you up and more about teasing your senses. It’s the culinary equivalent of tuning the bagpipes before the march, just enough to get you salivating, ready for the main event.

Then the first plate lands. Ribeye, seared to perfection, juices glistening under the restaurant’s warm lights. Chips stacked beside it, crisp and golden. A ladle of peppercorn sauce, rich and peppery, pooling like molten treasure. It’s a sight that makes you sit up straighter, knife in hand, ready to commit.

How Many Plates Is Enough?

The unspoken question at Kyloe’s Unlimited Steak Frites is always the same: how many plates can you manage?

On average, most diners settle comfortably at two plates each, a sweet spot where satisfaction meets sensibility. Two ribeyes, two rounds of chips, two generous pours of peppercorn sauce, and you’re happily full without feeling defeated.

It’s less about gluttony and more about camaraderie, challenge, and the sheer joy of seeing how far you can go. The ritual isn’t just about quantity, it’s about the fun of testing your appetite, laughing at your own ambition, and savouring the quality of Scottish beef with every bite.

The Carafe of Wine

Of course, no ritual is complete without libation. Kyloe offers a carafe of wine alongside the feast, and let me tell you, it’s a decent pour. We chose the red, a bold companion to the ribeye, its tannins cutting through the richness of the meat like a Highland wind.

There’s something deeply satisfying about sipping wine between plates, the rhythm of steak and sip, bite and swirl. It elevates the experience from indulgence to ceremony, reminding you that this isn’t just lunch, it’s a ritual worth repeating.

The Side That Stole the Show

Now, I’ll admit: the Unlimited Steak Frites is the headline act. But sometimes, the supporting cast steals the spotlight. For us, it was the brûléed cream of sweetcorn.

We couldn’t look past it on the menu, and thank goodness we didn’t. Arriving at the table, it’s brûléed right before your eyes, the sugar crust crackling under the flame. The result? A dish that’s both sweet and savoury, creamy and caramelised, indulgent yet delicate.

I’ll go on record: bar the steak frites, this was possibly one of the best things I’ve eaten all year. It’s the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite, look at your dining companion, and say, “This. This is why we eat out.”

The Scottish Twist

What makes Kyloe’s Unlimited Steak Frites more than just a gimmick is its Scottish twist. Steak frites is a Parisian classic, but here it’s reimagined with Scottish beef, sourced from the country’s finest farms and butchers.

There’s pride in every plate, a celebration of local produce that elevates the ritual beyond novelty. It’s not just about quantity, it’s about quality, provenance, and the joy of knowing your ribeye has travelled from Scottish pasture to Princes Street with care. Although asked how you would like your steak, they do suggest it be cooked pink which is medium rare. Ours was cooked to perfection, time and again.

Kyloe is nestled in the West End, overlooking Princes Street The restaurant blends modern style with a touch of grandeur. It’s the kind of place where you feel both comfortable and spoiled, where the clink of glasses and the sizzle from the grill create a soundtrack to your feast.

There’s a buzz in the room on Saturdays, a collective energy as diners glance at each other’s plates, silently competing, quietly cheering. It’s playful, and distinctly Edinburgh.

Why You Should Try It

• It’s a challenge: How many plates can you manage?

• It’s indulgent: Unlimited ribeye, chips, and sauce for £35 is a steal.

• It’s local: Scottish beef at its best, served with pride.

• It’s fun: Bread and butter to start, wine to sip, sweetcorn to brûlée (which is extra) it’s a full experience.

Kyloe’s Unlimited Steak Frites isn’t just a meal, it’s a ritual. A weekend tradition waiting to be claimed, a playful challenge wrapped in Scottish pride. Whether you stop at two plates or push yourself to eat more, you’ll leave with a story worth telling, a belly worth patting, and a newfound respect for the humble ribeye.

In a city rich with tradition, Kyloe has carved out a new one. And like all good rituals, it’s worth repeating.
