REVIEW : DRINK - Speciality Coffee

Hmmm, what is the point of the coffee bag?!? My first initial thought when I seen an advert on the TV for these. Why do you need a bag when coffee dissolves anyway?!? but I do love coffee and was delighted when Specialty Coffee sent me some of their coffee which included coffee in bags.

REVIEW : SPECIALTY COFFEE COMPANY, LOLAS COFFEE BAGS

Now I’ve been drinking coffee for years, and only just discovered through Specialty Coffee what Specialty coffee actually is. The term ‘Specialty coffee’ or ‘Speciality coffee’ is used to refer to coffee that is graded 80 points or above on a 100 point scale by a certified coffee taster (SCAA) or by a licensed Q Grader(CQI).

Specialty coffees are coffees at their peak and are different to other coffee because specialty coffee has been grown at the perfect altitude, at the correct time of year, in the best soil, and then picked at just the right time. All this translates into some of the most exciting and tasty coffee in the world. How freaking amazing is that!

Specialty Coffee Company are based down Newcastle way and have a passion for coffee. Their mission is to find the best coffee in the world and bring it to you. Their coffee experts travel the world (yes, I want this job) searching for the best single origin coffee growers and work directly with them to bring their coffee beans to them in Newcastle, where they roast it and deliver it direct to you. From Farm to Cup!

Specialty Coffee Co sent me some of their Lola’s House Blend Coffee Bags, and I have to say I was sceptical but I am now a total convert. I love coffee bags and I have no idea why. It’s just as easy to place a teaspoon of coffee in a cup and let it dissolve, but coffee bags do offer better quality coffee, coffee that you would use in a French coffee press, or a stovetop or coffee machine. You can adjust your coffee strength by the amount of time you leave the bag in your cup, squeeze it and throw it away like any teabag.

Tearing open the pouch that holds the coffee bag will instantly release a delicious aroma of strong coffee. It’s quite pungent but if you love coffee, it will only make you want to make your cuppa even quicker.

I let the coffee bag steep for the recommended 3 minutes which resulted in a wonderfully strong, rich and smooth coffee. It was a good mouth feel and a strong aftertaste. The blend of coffee they use is Sumatra Gayo, Brazilian Arabica, and Indian Robusta which has flavours of smoke and black pepper which really come to the fore on the back note. There is a slight sweetness there too, with caramel and a hint of cocao and dark chocolate in the mix.

I enjoyed my coffee with a doughnut and I have to say the flavour pairing was spot on. The dark flavours of the smoke and pepper balanced out the sweetness of the doughnut but really enhanced the caramel in the coffee. Delish!

For an instant quick supreme cup o coffee, this is definitely the way to go!. You can order direct from their website.
