A Chat with Rhône Wine Producer, Caroline Moro: Exploring Rhône Valley's White Wines

Tucked away in the heart of France’s Rhône Valley, a white wine revolution is quietly unfolding—and Scottish palates need to take note. I caught up with Caroline Moro, head winemaker at the historic J. Denuzière vineyard, to dive into the spirit, science, and sustainability behind these expressive wines. Caroline shares how Rhône whites are no longer the region's best-kept secret—but a story of taste, terroir and tenacity that’s ready for the spotlight.

In the heart of Edinburgh, The SKYBar, played host to a superb day of flavour and finesse at the Rhône in White event brought to Edinburgh by Rhône Valley Vineyards and assisted by Wine Events Scotland. Over 100 white wines from across the Rhône Valley, representing more than 20 appellations including still, sparkling, fortified and dessert wines of all styles were available to sip and taste.

Amongst the highlights of the day, was masterclasses with Rhône Valley specialists Matt Walls and Alistair Cooper MW but I also had the opportunity to have a chat with Caroline Moro, an esteemed wine producer whose passion for her craft shines through every bottle.

Caroline Moro is the winemaker at J. Denuzière, a historic vineyard based in Condrieu in the Northern Rhône Valley. She’s been crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines there since 2014, with a focus on freshness, minimal intervention, and showcasing the unique character of each cru. Quite the gem in Rhône’s winemaking crown! And she is also the Ambassador for Rhône Valley Vineyards.

It was a real pleasure to talk with her amidst this event which provided an illuminating journey into the heart of Rhone Valley’s viticultural treasures. Her insights brought the Rhône’s terroir to life, offering a personal glimpse into the artistry behind one of France’s most revered wine regions.

White Wines of the Rhône Valley—The Hidden Gems You Need to Try!

Ask any wine lover about the Rhône Valley, and they'll rave about the reds. But let’s talk white Rhône wines—bold, diverse, and seriously underrated.

Winemaker Caroline Moro is on a mission to change that. "Rhône whites offer everything—from dry, acidic freshness to full-bodied, complex bottles built for ageing. Whether it’s an affordable bottle or an exclusive cru, the quality and accessibility make them a must-try.”

Are Rhône Whites Catching Up to the Reds?

"The visibility is improving, but we still need to push forward," Caroline explains. “It’s important not to overthink it—just enjoy the wine! With the amazing terroir, growing volume, and sheer quality in the bottle, there’s no reason why Rhône whites won’t continue to shine.”

Sustainability—The Future of Rhône Winemaking

Rhône’s climate is its greatest asset for sustainable winemaking, but adaptation is key. “We’re ahead in the vineyards, but in winemaking, there’s still work to do,” Caroline admits. “Sustainability means reducing energy use, but climate change makes that tricky.”

The key? Collaboration and innovation. “We’ve learned, adapted, and embraced new techniques. The market is competitive—we can’t afford to wait." Rhône winemakers are committed to making their wines eco-friendly, and the future looks bright.

Caroline’s Journey—From Science to Rhône Wine Mastery

Coming from Burgundy, Caroline never expected to be crafting signature Rhône wines. “I started with viticulture rather than wine itself—I was fascinated by how grapes could create such a diverse product.”

In 2014, she was handed the keys to the winery and given full creative control. The result? she’s crafted some incredible wines for the vineyard but we’re most excited about her own two standout white wines - St Joseph Blanc and Saint-Péray - wines known for their freshness, long lees ageing, and aromatic complexity.

“Pineapple and grapefruit notes meet mineral elegance, creating wines that are expressive yet age-worthy," she shares. "I took my time finding my style, but every bottle reflects attention to detail and the journey behind it.”

Food & Wine Pairing—Rhône Whites Shine with Asian Flavours

Caroline’s top pick? St Joseph white—a 100% Marsanne that pairs perfectly with Asian cuisine. "Its texture balances out the spice beautifully, making it ideal for bold, flavour-packed dishes."

Rhône whites have been around for centuries, but now they’re making real noise. If you haven’t explored them yet, now’s the time!
