Christmas at Loch Levens Larder

Nestled in the heart of Kinross-shire, about an hours drive from Edinburgh, Loch Leven's Larder is far more than a farm shop and café. Built around the busy working fields of Channel of Pittendreich Farm, where more than seventeen varieties of vegetables are grown alongside oats and wheat, the destination has always celebrated local produce at its best. That connection to the land shines through in every corner of the business, from the stocked food hall to the bakery and deli, but nowhere more so than in the café, where the latest menu makes the most of Scotland's seasonal harvest with creativity and flair.

On my recent visit, it was clear that the team is already embracing the festive season. The café has launched its Christmas menu, offering both two and three-course dining options that strike a balance between comfort, quality and celebration.

We began with the whipped feta and sourdough, a wonderfully fresh starter that's perfect for sharing. The portions here are generous, so arrive with an appetite. I particularly enjoyed the addition of creamy brie, which added another layer of richness and a lovely contrast in texture. For mains, the chicken with pressed potato and rich jus delivered everything you'd hope for from comforting winter dining, while the monkfish curry offered something altogether different, combining delicate seafood with bold, warming spices and plenty of flavour. Be warned though, it certainly brings the heat.

Desserts were equally impressive. Stewed plums with toasted oats and ice cream offered a seasonal finish that felt both nostalgic and refined, offering a big hug in a bowl, while the chocolate torte was unapologetically indulgent and the perfect choice for anyone with a sweet tooth. Throughout the meal, there was a sense that ingredients had been chosen carefully and allowed to shine, reflecting the farm-to-fork ethos that has made Loch Leven's Larder such a popular destination.

There is also Alpine cocktails available for £10.95 - Salted Espresso Martini and an After Eight!

Beyond the café, the food hall remains a treasure trove for food lovers and Christmas shoppers alike. Browsing the shelves is an experience in itself, with an impressive selection of artisan and premium Scottish brands including Edinburgh Shortbread House, Walkers, Tracklements relishes and chutneys, Charles Macleod Stornoway Black Pudding and Taylors crisps. Meanwhile, the fresh food counters tempt visitors with smoked salmon, charcuterie from East Coast Cured, freshly baked sausage rolls, pies and cheese scones. Whether you're planning a festive feast or searching for thoughtful gifts, there is genuinely something for everyone.

This year, however, Loch Leven's Larder is taking Christmas to another level with the launch of its ambitious six-week Alpine Experience. From mid-November until Christmas Eve, the site will be transformed into a festive mountain village inspired by the charm and warmth of the Alps. Guests can expect Alpine-inspired food and drink, fondue, sharing platters, an Alpine Bar, silent discos, German beer festivals and even private Alpine Lodges for gatherings and celebrations. Adding a uniquely Scottish touch, visitors can also try their hand at curling on an inflatable rink, combining a beloved national pastime with the atmosphere of a European winter retreat.

What makes Loch Leven's Larder so special is its ability to continually reinvent itself while staying true to its agricultural roots. The new Christmas menu showcases the quality ingredients grown and sourced by the business, while the upcoming Alpine Experience promises to create one of Scotland's most memorable festive destinations. Whether you're visiting for lunch, picking up gifts, stocking your Christmas pantry or planning a seasonal night out, Loch Leven's Larder delivers warmth, authenticity and a genuine sense of occasion. This Christmas, it looks set to be one of the most enchanting places in Scotland to eat, shop and celebrate.
