FOOD : Sunday Roast at Angles Share, Edinburgh

I never realised until Tik Tok showed me, that Sunday Roast is mainly a UK food tradition. Most Americans and Europeans don’t indulge in a roast Sunday lunch; but most visitors to our great country who try a Sunday Roast love it and try to recreate it once they get back to their homes.

Sunday Roast for me has changed over the years. My Mums Sunday lunch was always a different roasted meat every Sunday - pork, lamb, beef or chicken with all the trimmings including roast tatties, honey glazed carrots, Yorkshire puddings, and plenty of thick steaming hot gravy that you’d pour over the entire plate.

Now-a-days Sunday Roast is a big deal and there are plenty of restaurants who offer this every Sunday, however there are only a handful of restaurants that manage to do this well. I can confirm that Angels Share, know their stuff and can deliver a large plate of 100% yum!

REVIEW OF SUNDAY ROAST LUNCH AT ANGELS SHARE, EDINBURGH

As a hotel, restaurant and bar, Angels Share is located in an ideal spot at the West End of Princes Street, they also have the Johnnie Walker Experience as their neighbour; and as someone who knows a thing or two about whisky and food, Sunday Lunch most definitely pairs well with a dram or two of Johnnie Walker.

The mirrored bar in the centre of the room, showcases a range of spirits including whisky. The bar is the main focal point, surrounded by a variety of seating options including large comfortable booths, high tables and smaller tables at the windows.

During our visit there was live music from a solo musician creating a relaxed atmosphere - that lovely lazy long Sunday afternoon ideal for eating good food.

Their Sunday Roast is 28 Day Dry Aged Beef, roast potatoes, buttered greens, roast carrot and parsnip, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Sharing roast is £40 or Single roast is £21pp.

There are additional sides like Halloumi Fries and Irn Bru chilli jam or Savoy Cabbage and Oatmeal, and desserts like Millionaire Brownie and Cranachan.

A large tray laden with the goods is presented to the table. There’s 4 thick large slices of superb medium rare beef, green beans and broccoli, the cheesiest and most scrumptious pot of cauliflower cheese and two gravy jugs filled to the brim.

There is plenty of food for two, even two very hungry people; generous amounts of gravy that you can pool into the middle of those Yorkies and over the tatties, meat and all the other veg. For me the roast tatties were a little overcooked, but thats just a personal preference.

I’d have chosen the La Serre Cabernet Sauvignon Vin de Pays d’Oc. This wine is a robust blend of ripe red and dark fruits. There’s a hint of spiciness but its big and bold and ideal for hearty meat dishes like Sunday Roast.

If Sunday Roast is on your must try list when visiting Edinburgh or Scotland or you just want to treat yourself and not have to do the dishes, this is one place I highly recommend.

  • They offer vegetarian and vegan food

    They are not wheelchair accessible with 2 steps into the restaurant

  • They are not dog friendly
