Lulabelle’s – A Hidden Gem in Tarbert Serving Global Street Food & the West Coast's only Seafood Boil!

If you're searching for seafood in Scotland, Lulabelles of Tarbert is a must-visit! Nestled on the west coast, this global street food-style restaurant specialises in seafood boils, packed with shellfish and seasonal ingredients. Whether you're indulging in a scallop ceviche or Korean bao, savouring an arancini or exploring their creative menu, Lulabelles delivers. With its welcoming atmosphere and dedication to local produce, it's the perfect spot for seafood lovers looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Tarbert.

As you venture further west and north in Scotland, restaurants and eateries become increasingly scarce. The rugged landscape, with its ever-changing terrain and widely spaced towns and villages, means many places have no dining options at all. Some offer only a handful of choices—often hit-or-miss—while others boast one or two exceptional spots.

It’s a shame, really. Many of these towns and villages are nestled along some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenic routes, making them perfect places to pause, savour authentic Scottish cuisine, and immerse yourself in the local charm. If only there were more opportunities to enjoy great food while soaking in the stunning surroundings.

WHERE TO EAT IN TARBERT : DISCOVERING A LOCAL HIDDEN GEM

Tarbert, nestled on Scotland’s stunning West Coast, is often seen as just a brief stopover—a place for a quick break before continuing the journey. Many travellers pass through on their way to Campbeltown, the revered whisky capital, or the Kennacraig Ferry terminal, the gateway to the legendary island of Islay. But Tarbert deserves more than a fleeting visit—it’s a destination worth pausing for, and Lulabelle’s is the perfect reason to do just that.

Lulabelle’s, a charming waterside restaurant, that sits right on Tarbert Marina. Just a 30-second drive from the main road, this hidden gem is ideal for a leisurely lunch or an evening meal, where you can slow down, soak in the coastal atmosphere, and truly appreciate the beauty of the journey.

TASTE THE WORLD IN ONE MEAL : ITALIAN, THAI, KOREAN AND SCANDINAVIAN DISHES

So, instead of rushing through, why not stop, savour, and enjoy? Tarbert has more to offer than just a pit stop—it’s a place to experience, and Lulabelle’s is waiting to welcome you.

Lulabelle’s menu is a celebration of global flavours, crafted by owner Cathy, who brings a fresh and innovative twist to this charming corner of Scotland. With a rich background in street food, Cathy infuses her dishes with bold, international influences while showcasing the local ingredients.

Dining at Lulabelle’s is like taking a culinary journey around the world. Start in Italy with crispy mozzarella and tomato arancini, then head to Thailand for mussels bathed in a fragrant kaffir lime, lemongrass, and coconut milk broth. Next, Korea awaits with chicken bao served alongside tangy pickles, before skipping over to Scandinavia for a Smörgås open sandwiches layered with the likes of roasted beets, smoked venison, and fresh local crab.

Beyond the regular menu, Lulabelle’s offers a selection of rotating specials. Most recently, they’ve introduced their Seafood Boil, a must-try for anyone craving a feast of flavourful shellfish—and exactly what I came to try!

THE ULTIMATE SEAFOOD BOIL EXPERIENCE IN TARBERT

A seafood boil instantly brings to mind the vibrant food culture of Louisiana, Maryland, and the Carolinas, where it’s a go-to feast for big celebrations. These gatherings have become a staple in local restaurants, with diners indulging in crawfish, shrimp, corn, and potatoes, all infused with bold, mouthwatering flavours.

The experience is unapologetically hands-on—tables covered in plastic, bibs tied on, and a steaming bucket of seafood poured directly onto the table for everyone to dig in. Presentation varies from large bowls and buckets to aluminium foil trays, like the ones at Lulabelle’s, but the essence remains the same: a communal, messy, and utterly delicious experience.

The flavours are elevated by garlic butter, cocktail sauce, and fresh lemon wedges, encouraging diners to peel, dip, and savour each bite. It’s a feast that embodies both indulgence and tradition, making every meal an event to remember.

SEAFOOD BOIL IN SCOTLAND : A SOUTHERN TADITION WITH A LOCAL TWIST

At Lulabelles we tucked into the Pani-Puri, crisp little bites to whet the appetite before the main feast.

As the plates and a generous stack of napkins arrived, it was time for the main event—a steaming tray piled high with fresh seafood, each piece glistening in a rich, Cajan spice-infused broth. The feast featured lobster, langoustines, crab legs, mussels, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, and even boiled eggs, all infused with deep, aromatic flavours.  Personally, I didn’t think the eggs were a great addition—but that’s just my own preference (I can be quite picky about eggs!). What I really wish I’d had was a bowl of intensely garlicky butter to dip all those succulent langoustines into. And I am sure, had I asked Cathy, she would happily have swopped out ingredients or provided me with a bowl of melted garlic butter!

A lobster cracker and fork were on hand to help crack open the lobster and crab, while the langoustines peeled apart effortlessly, revealing their sweet, delicate meat. The mussels and potatoes soaked up every drop of the flavourful broth, adding extra richness to every bite.

Every element of the meal was designed for indulgence—bold flavours, hands-on dining, and the joy of savouring each bite. The experience wasn’t just about the food; it was about the messy, satisfying ritual of peeling, dipping, and devouring, making it a great experience.

If you ever find yourself exploring Scotland’s stunning West Coast near Tarbert, make sure to visit Lulabelle’s—Cathy will be more than happy to welcome you with delicious food and warm hospitality.
