Le Monde Edinburgh Brunch Review: The New Must‑Try Mid‑Morning Hotspot
I’ll be honest: I didn’t actually know Le Monde did food, so walking in for brunch felt like stepping into a secret. What a surprise. The moment you enter, the noise of George Street dissolves and you’re wrapped in this calm, elegant oasis just steps from St Andrew Square. The space is gorgeous, a sweeping round bar, plush booth seating, soft lighting; the kind of setting that makes you instantly slow down and settle in. It’s stylish without trying too hard, and already feels like one of those places you want to linger.
The staff set the tone beautifully: warm, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. We started, as any respectable mid‑morning, mid‑week outing should, with Bellinis. Fresh, peachy, and dangerously easy to sip. The brunch menu itself is a mix of classics and playful twists, the sort of line‑up that makes choosing almost impossible. Their Fry Ups come fully loaded with Stornoway black pudding, fried eggs, beans, bacon, square sausage, haggis, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and butter. It’s a proper Scottish spread, the kind that makes you grin just reading it.
But the surprises keep coming. There’s smashed avo on toast with Irn‑Bru chilli jam (yes, really), steak and eggs with spiced butter and French fries, and Turkish eggs with Greek yoghurt and warm flatbread. The hash brown tacos sound like pure mischief, and for lighter appetites there’s Le Monde’s granola or peanut butter and coconut overnight oats. It’s a menu that balances comfort with curiosity; familiar favourites alongside dishes that make you raise an eyebrow in the best way.
We went for the Fry Up with the works, and it was superb. Everything tasted fresh, well‑seasoned, and clearly made with care - no limp mushrooms or sad toast in sight. Alongside it, we ordered the banana bread French toast, which turned out to be the star of the table: mascarpone, caramelised banana, heather honey and bacon. Sweet, salty, soft, crisp and indulgent without tipping into sickly. It’s one of those dishes you think about later in the day and wish you’d ordered two.
Then came the Pressed Croissant Benedicts, which might just be Le Monde’s signature move. A croissant is pressed and toasted all buttery and crisp, then loaded with two perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise and your choice of topping. Options include Virginia cured streaky bacon, fried kale with smoked paprika, or haggis with blistered tomatoes. Naturally, we couldn’t resist the chopped square sausage with Irn‑Bru chilli jam. It was outrageous in the best possible way, a flavour combination we didn’t know we needed, and now can’t stop thinking about.
By the time we finished, it was clear: this is Edinburgh’s new brunch spot you didn’t know you needed in your life. Le Monde has created something special — a calm, stylish escape serving food that’s confident, generous and genuinely exciting. Whether you’re after a full Scottish, a playful twist on the classics, or a croissant Benedict that will ruin you for all others, this is a mid‑morning destination worth adding to your rotation.
