T42 Tearoom - An Edinburgh Tearoom in Quiet Marchmont
Some places shout for your attention; T42 Tearoom simply opens its door and lets the calm do the talking. It’s one of those rare Edinburgh hideaways where time seems to slow down the moment you step inside; a quiet, sun‑kissed pocket of the city that feels made for lingering. T42 is already a peaceful retreat, but come summer it will be glorious with a lovely outdoor terrace perfectly positioned to catch the sun. You can picture it now: pots of tea steaming gently in the light, a soft breeze, and that unmistakable Edinburgh hush that makes you want to stay for “just one more cup.”
Inside, the tearoom leans into a whimsical blend of Scotland and Alice in Wonderland. It has the warmth and familiarity of a home dining room, somewhere you’d happily settle for hours, layered with playful touches that give it character without tipping into kitsch.
One of the standout features is the series of large wall panels covered in tartan swatches. They’re not just décor; they double as a rotating gallery space for local artists. It’s a clever, community‑minded touch that gives the room texture and soul.
Afternoon Tea: A Steal at £15pp
We visited specifically for the afternoon tea, and at £15 per person, it’s an absolute steal in Edinburgh right now.
A three‑tier birdcage stand arrives at the table, generously filled:
• Bottom tier: Homemade sandwiches, simple, fresh, and comforting.
• Middle tier: Fruit and plain cones with jam, cream and butter (a detail I always appreciate).
• Top tier: A selection of pastries, macarons, and fresh fruit drizzled with chocolate.
Is it the most beautiful or most intricate afternoon tea I’ve ever had? No. But it’s lovely, honest, and exactly the kind of spread that suits the space.
The Real Star: Shibui Tea
Shibui Tea, a small Edinburgh‑based company, is known for its beautifully crafted blends made with high‑quality ingredients sourced from around the world, and that passion shows in every cup. Where T42 truly shines is in serving these blends; Shibui’s clarity, balance and modern‑yet‑comforting flavours elevate the entire experience, especially when poured into their delicate and beautiful china cups.
We tried the Moroccan Mint and the Chocolate Chai, both fragrant, soothing and wonderfully rounded, and their straightforward but well‑chosen tea list tempts you back to sample the next blend -Cherry Pie, Vanilla Rooibos, Lemon Punch and more.
Their counter is a full parade of baking comfort - pillowy sponges, glossy tarts, flaky pastries and old‑school traybakes lined up with pride. They also serve a selection of breakfast and brunch dishes, but it’s the sweet and savoury crêpes I believe, that quietly steal the show!
Service is warm in that very Edinburgh way; unhurried, friendly, and quietly attentive. You’re looked after without ever feeling hovered over.
T42 Tearoom isn’t chasing trends or theatrics. It’s offering something far more valuable: a peaceful corner of Edinburgh where you can enjoy proper tea, homemade bakes, and a few hours of gentle escape. With its sunny terrace, tartan‑lined walls, and Shibui‑powered pots, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to time and time again.
