WHISKY FORAGER REVIEW : Glenturret, The Hosh

Glenturret - "The Hosh" from Scotlands oldest working distillery dating from 1775 with an open-mash tun and Douglas Fir washbacks, the traditional way of Whisky production is a rather comforting way of keeping history alive.

So for a Whisky to rhyme with the famous Scottish dance the "slosh", conjuring up images of yer Auntie a bit puggled on the dancefloor was a bold move. Although the Gaelic word Hosh actually refers to the stunning scenery surrounding the distillery and the old name they gave to the distillery……a far more tranquil image!

The Colour

Golden, honey coloured rich and vibrant, this natural colour and non chill filtered whisky has been developing both flavour and character in seasoned sherry butts for 13 years.

The Nose

Gentle and welcoming this cask strength presents at 59.4% but has a warming and soft edge, with light aromatics of woodland fruits, and a hint of ginger spice with the background of sweeter sherry to come, a subtle elegant dram.

The Taste

Fruity in character, the light berries that were shown in the aroma, gives way to richer, deeper and more complex raisin and slightly nutty, woody notes kick in, with a drizzle of sweetness. Vanilla follows and slowly finishes off with more of the lovely honey goodness, ginger nuts and gentle spice..

Conclusion

With this being a limited edition whisky and only 602 bottle produced from a single cask, it really is a pleasure to taste and I’m always a bit conflicted with enthusiasts buying these kind of exclusive releases and holding onto them to make a profit or keeping them as a trophy; as it should be opened, enjoyed and fondly remembered for what the Distillery Manager, Ian Renwick chose it to be, which is a fantastic single malt Whisky!
